Who to contact...

White ladderThat really depends on whether you've found a property you like, or you're just interested in finding out more information.  However, all applications for the HomeBuy schemes have to go through a local HomeBuy agent, so that's probably your best bet for a first point of call.

HomeBuy Agents

HomeBuy agents were set up by the government, one to each region, to act as a kind of 'gateway' through to finding you a property, as well as helping you find out about your options, and to help you go through the process of applying.  You can find a list of HomeBuy agents in this directory section.

Housing Providers/Developers

If you've already seen a property, either through local marketing or by passing the development, then feel free to approach the housing association or developer directly.  They'll be able to tell you about the properties in the development, give you information about prices etc, and point you in the direction of your local HomeBuy agent.

Housing Associations

If you've already got a relationship with a housing association, for example if you're a tenant of theirs, then again it makes sense to approach them directly.  They may have special deals or criteria for existing tenants, so it's worth asking.

Independent Financial Advisors

You'll need an affordability check, and your HomeBuy agent will be able to recommend an independent financial advisor who specialises in shared ownership and shared equity home purchases.  Alternatively, you can look in our directory section and contact them directly, before you even start the process of registering.  That way, you'll have a better idea of whether you're going to be a good candidate, and if you are, how much you could afford to spend on your new home.  It's always best to go for an IFA who specialises in affordable home ownership because they will be more likely to be able to find you a good deal when it comes to applying for your mortgage.

Solicitors

Once you've found a property and your application has been accepted, you'll need a specialist solicitor.  Once again, there's a list on our directory section, or one may be recommended by your HomeBuy agent or housing association.  Even if you have a family solicitor, it makes sense to go with a company that specialises in affordable home ownership, as the process can be more complicated than a traditional house purchase.
